Instagram Introduces Parental Alerts for Teen Suicide-Related Searches
Meta's Instagram is launching a new parental notification system designed to alert caregivers when teens repeatedly search for terms related to suicide or self-harm. The feature, rolling out next week across the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, will trigger alerts via email, text, WhatsApp, or in-app notifications after detecting multiple concerning searches within a short timeframe.
The company collaborated with its Suicide and Self-Harm Advisory Group to establish detection thresholds, with plans to expand the system to Ireland and other regions later this year. Meta [META] also announced forthcoming alerts for AI conversations involving similar concerning content.
